About Us
Brighton Kurdistan Solidarity (BKS) is part of the UK Kurdistan Solidarity Network. We work locally in Brighton, with other solidarity groups in the UK and with members of the Kurdish community to educate ourselves and raise broader awareness about key issues and people’s struggles in the Kurdistan region. Locally in Brighton we organise activities like public educational events, speakers, film screenings, cultural events and fundraisers for humanitarian causes.
We are an anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, anti-racist and non-hierarchical organisation. We reject patriarchy, racism, Islamophobia, and all forms of oppression, and we respect diversity in cultural and gendered identities.
Our group welcomes people who speak languages other than English, and if you or someone you know would like to participate or attend an event but are not fluent in English please get in touch and we will try to arrange for a translator.
Our group decision-making operates through consensus, a creative process in which we strive to include all persons’ opinions, ideas and concerns so that we reach solutions that everyone accepts. We ask that new members attend three regular (but non-consecutive) meetings before becoming eligible to participate in group decision-making. However, new participants can immediately become fully involved in existing projects and working groups, and may freely propose new ideas and voice concerns.
BKS meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm at the Cowley Club in Brighton. These meetings are open to the interested public and will vary in format based on our current activities and emerging events. To keep up to date on our activities and meeting topics, please join our mailing list to receive announcements.
