Press Release: European Parliament Event in Solidarity with Rojava

On the 27th of January from 19:00-20:00, an event titled “Defend Rojava, Defend Democratic Confederalism” will be held in the European Parliament in Brussels, Room ASP 5E2 co-hosted by political parties Sinistra Italiana, Die Linke, and Enhedslisten. The event will focus on recent existential threats to Kurdish communities and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. Speakers will include:

The situation in Aleppo, North-East Syria, and Rojava is extremely critical.

The Autonomous Administration and the project of Democratic Confederalism are under full-scale attack and are facing an existential threat from the new Syrian regime led by al-Jolani.

This assault is being carried out in coordination with Erdoğan’s militias, whose objective is to weaken and dismantle the Kurdish liberation movement, and with international powers that have cowardly abandoned the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), first and foremost the United States.

The European Union also bears major responsibility. Following the launch of the large-scale offensive, Ursula von der Leyen visited Damascus to meet al-Jolani, where a diplomatic and economic agreement was reached that is directly contributing to the current situation.

As Sinistra Italiana, Die Linke, and Enhedslisten, we strongly condemn the conduct of the European Union and reaffirm our full support for Democratic Confederalism as a political project grounded in participatory democracy, self-determination, pluralism, gender equality, and eco-social justice.

With this event, we aim to provide a platform for comrades from the Democratic Confederalist movement, as well as for all those who stand in solidarity with them. It will also be an opportunity to collectively reflect on the strategies needed to support the just struggle of Rojava in Italy, Germany, and across Europe.

In this dark moment, we believe that internationalism is more necessary than ever.
