How to build a revolutionary social movement: Learning from the Rojava Revolution
A six part course on the core ideas of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement – online and in person throughout 2023
In 2023, Kurdistan Solidarity Network is running a course about the ideology and practices of the Rojava Revolution and the wider Kurdistan Freedom Movement, looking at what we can learn from one of the most inspirational and powerful social movements of our time. The sessions will be given by organisers based here who work closely with the Kurdistan Freedom Movement, and will translate key ideas and approaches of the Movement to our context. Together we’ll get nerdy about ideology, but also look at practical applications we can make to our organising here.
This course is for people who have heard of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement and want to find out more. Each of the six sessions will focus on a central idea of the Movement, from how women’s liberation manifests in practice, to the political system of democratic confederalism, to how understandings of history shape the work of the Movement today. We’ll hear from organisers who work within the Movement (who are based here, in Europe, and in Kurdistan), but also have time for discussion in each session. The course will run both online (in six 2-hour sessions on a weekday evening every other month from March 2023 through January 2024) and in person (with the six sessions taking place over a weekend residential later this year). You can choose to attend either online or in person, or do both!
The online sessions will take place 7.30 – 9.30pm on:
Wednesday 15 March 2023
Wednesday 17 May 2023
Wednesday 19 July 2023
Wednesday 20 September 2023
Wednesday 15 November 2023
Wednesday 17 January 2024
We would like people to do their best to attend all six sessions in the online course.
The residential education (covering the same topics as the online sessions over the course of a weekend) will take place 28th – 30th July 2023. Location tbc.
There will be an additional residential course later in the year that expands on the core topics for people who have participated in the intro sessions and want to go deeper.
If you have any questions, give us a shout: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We won’t be charging for either the online or residential sessions because we think revolutionary political ideology should be accessible for everyone. However, we would ask those who are able to give to donate via this crowdfunder to cover the costs of running this course.
